Krar Collective - Live - 2012-09-21 [FLAC]

Led by Temesegen Tareken, a former pupil of veteran Ethiopian vibraphone player Mulatu Astatke, the Krar Collective play a gritty and upbeat take on traditional Ethiopian songs.

The core of their sound is the Krar - the Ethiopian 5 or 6 stringed harp, and they played songs from their debut album 'Ethiopia Super Krar'.

Theodros Mitiku - Teddy's Mood [1998]

                      R  E  U  P  L  O  A  D

Rest in peace Theodros! Visit this link and read this gentle obituary text:

Theodros Mitiku was one of the most talented and versatile Ethiopian musicians. Teddy's passion for music emerged at an early age when he was given an alto saxophone by his second grade music teacher, and his talent has continued to flourish.

For the past 36 years, "Teddy Mitty," as he is known to his fans, has been enthralling audiences with his unique playing style and mastery of the saxophone. Starting in 1962 Teddy has performed with the "The Soul Echoes", later called "Ibex Band", "The Menelik Band" and other bands in Egypt and the United States, finally returning to Ethiopia after a fifteen year absence.

   R   E   U   P   L   O   A   D

Mikaya Behailu died at the age of 36.

May she rest in peace!

Born: May 30, 1977

Micaiah/Mikaya  says: "my parents told me that i use to bounce with joy on my nanny's back listening to music when i was just an infant." Obviously, her passion for music was conceived back then.

At kindergarten age, she remembers having a small guitar that her father bought her. Who knows the role that guitar has played? Back then, she was known for singing songs from other local signers at Bethlehem public school where she enjoyed her education from kindergarten to elementary classes (1982-89 G. C). She started writing songs when she was in high scool form 1990-1994 G.C.

Though in 1995 and a year later she tried to launch her first album on her own, she failed to do so due to lack of finance and experience.

Starting 1998 G.C, she worked full time and was attending night classes at Addis Ababa University for the next seven years. But Micaiah never stoped singing. Micaiah says: "I'am addicted to music." After a long journey, in April 2007 she released her first album entitled "Shemametew". It comprises eleven numbers. Nazarenes - Meditation [2012] [ethiopia-eritrea]

Steeped in Rastafarian grooves, produced by a St. Croix native, and two brothers as singers, Noah and Medhane Tewolde, come from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

The European-based brothers incorporate pan-African elements, island grooves, Jamaican jive, and pop-funk creations.

The reggae-inspired album contains jazzy influences, funky beats, and vivid vocals with meaningful lyrics and spiritual connotations. The lyrical worldplay and dancehall sound showcases Nazarenes diverse song repertoire with a laid-back, funky feel that is anything but boring.

Fourteen Jah-inspired musical tracks showcase the great amount of creativity and soulful inspiration that give Meditation a shining element that succeeds without a doubt.

Ethiopian mixtape by Marc Teissier du Cros [2012]

originaly posted : here

Marc Teissier du Cros, one half of the brains behind Paris label The Record Makers,  home to some of Paris’ strongest music acts the likes of Sébastien Tellier lent his talents this past July to summer festival Les Siestes Electroniques.

Mining the music archive of the Left Bank’s Musée du Quai Branly, Teissier du Cros complies Ethiopia!  an Ethio Jazz & modern music mixtape featuring some of the genres biggest names Mahmoud Ahmed, Bahta Gebre-Heywet, Tilahoun Gessesse, Mulatu Astatke, Mohammed Jimmy  Mohammed and more.

Without a doubt the inclusion of tracks like ‘Tezeta’ by Mahmoud Ahmed makes this mixtape tug hard on nostalgic strings for any listener familiar with the Addis Ababa music scene of the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s.

Marc tells that he delved into the genre when music label Buda Musique began releasing the ‘Ethiopiques‘ series  curated by Francis Falceto in the late 90′s.  A fan of Pharaoh Sanders in his student days, he mentions that "listening to Ethiopian music was like discovering where Pharoah Sanders found some of his inspiration from. Ethiopia was the heartbeat of the American free jazz scene of the late 60′s, Coltrane, Pharoah!  A bit the same way seeing Fela Kuti live in Lagos gave James Brown enough guts to move from soul to funk music.”
